To paraphrase a rose

Yesterday - a spittin' time
depending on the way you look at it
or a long time ago
there was once a rosebud
which grew into beauty
in all fairness
the name of the rose of Sharon is
but a lily of the Madonna
or a Fleur-de-Lis
so with emblems of kings of France
the Florentine Medicis
the Lotus cross brings it back to
the Indus Valley and
its name fades in the mists.

"Stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus"
"Yesterday's rose endures in its name, we hold empty names".
Umberto Eco: The Name of the Rose
